The world number five pushed Murray all the way in the first round of the team competition, taking Great Britain's talisman to five sets before succumbing to the Scot in Birmingham.
The Japanese ace then got the better of the world number one at the US Open, taking out the three-time Grand Slam winner in the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows.
That win was significant in his career, but Nishikori feels that the loss in England's second city was of more importance to his progression as a player.
"I was very close to winning against Andy Murray, that was the turning point of the season," said the 26-year-old. "I had many chances and that gave me confidence to beat him at the US Open. Now here in London I want to end this great season well."
Nishikori is in a group with Stan Wawrinka, Marin Cilic and Murray at the ATP World Tour Finals and knows he faces three tough matches at the O2 Arena.
"Maybe our group has more experience than the other one, it won't be easy because they are playing well," he added.
